President's welcome
Sara Faithfull, President of EONS
Founded in 1984, the European Oncology Nursing Society is dedicated to the educational development of nurses who care for cancer patients and their families and to the recognition of cancer nursing as a distinct clinical specialty.
EONS members include over 200 individual nurses, 33 national member societies and groups and 19 institutions involved in cancer care, making it the largest single representative of cancer nurses in Europe.
EONS is actively engaged in a number of educational activities, such as its Post-basic Curriculum for Cancer Nursing and the EONS Curriculum for Cancer in Older People, with a further curriculum for those working with children with cancer currently in development. Recent EONS initiatives such as NOEP, TITAN and TARGET have resulted in over 6,000 European nurses being trained in up-to-date protocols for the management of treatment induced thrombocytopaenia and neutropaenia; the care and management of those receiving targeted therapies for an increasing range of cancers, and the nutritional needs of cancer patients to name but a few.
EONS is also dedicated to the development of a European corpus of cancer nursing knowledge and funds research initiatives which address the specific concerns of cancer nurses and their patients.
To communicate its work, EONS publishes a quarterly newsletter, downloadable from this site, and hosts regular events and conferences. It also has close links with the European Journal of Oncology Nursing, which publishes research of direct relevance to patient care, nurse education, management and policy development.
