First synthetic organ implantation is successful
Added: Thursday 18 August 2011
Surgeons in Sweden have carried out the world's first successful implantation of a synthetic organ. The windpipe was created by British scientists and then coated with the patient's own stem cells before the operation. Professor Paolo Macchiarini, the Italian surgeon who led the operation, said: "This is a synthetic windpipe. The beauty of this is you can have it immediately. There is no delay. This technique does not rely on a human donation."
