Charities risk paying up for empty premises

The Charity Commission for England and Wales recently warned charities of the dangers of renting commercial property and then leaving it empty. Because charities occupying commercial property get an 80% discount on business rates (and a further 20% at the discretion of the local authority), some are encouraged by landlords to rent hard-to-let property. Problems arise when these properties are, or seem to be, empty. If the charity is not using the property for charitable purposes, it may be liable to lose the discretionary 20% discount and have to pay up.
