Her i efteråret færdiggøres et stort arbejde omkring patientsikkerhed.

The Danish Cancer Nursing Society (Fagligt Selskab for Kræftsygeplejersker – FSK) is a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) under the umbrella of the Danish Nurses Organization. There are 36 societies in Denmark representing different areas of nursing. The Cancer Nursing Society is the third largest, representing around 1000 members from all over the cancer field.

The Society was established in 1980 and in 2010 we celebrated its 30 year anniversary. The Board consists of 9 members elected from among its members for a two year period. Each of the Board members have their portfolio that they are responsible for and always report back to the Board. There is of course a President and a President-Elect, one responsible for the finances, one for the conferences, one for the Magazine, etc.

The work of the organization is based on voluntary work. The society´s vision is to contribute to the development of nursing care for patients with cancer and their relatives, to contribute to the education and training for cancer nurses to meet high quality standards and to be a strong voice in the multiprofessional field of cancer.

Every year we organise a conference lasting a few days, bringing the latest news in cancer nursing to 2000-3000 participants. In November 2012 the theme will be "inequality in cancer". We publish a quarterly magazine, which is very popular. The members pay a membership fee per year and the magazine is free for members, but we have a lot of additional subscribers, such as the Royal Danish Library.

During 2012 we have worked on building a new website. We are very focused on electronic interaction with our members as we do believe that this will attract some of the younger nurses in cancer nursing. We hope that the website will help to increase interest among members and that news and debate will reach the members faster and encourage them to network, to speak up whenever they feel the need to do so.

Our strategy is to be a visible Board for our members. At our General Assembly we will present a new structure where each of the 9 board seats will have a clear role description. We hope this makes it easier to recruit new members.

In December 2010, the third Danish National Cancer Plan was completed. The Danish Cancer Nursing Society has been part of this work with the highest number of nurses ever. 18 highly expert cancer nurses have been working in a Multiprofessional arena, where often they are the only nurse. The Danish National Board of Health has the overall responsibility to make sure that the cancer plan is translated into national recommendations. In this way, The Danish Cancer Nursing Society has a political influence on cancer care in Denmark.

We also have good collaboration with patients through the Danish Cancer Society. We have participated in a large program about patient safety, which will finish this autumn. The program will especially highlight recommendations in medical cancer treatment, radiotherapy, the problems in transitions in treatment and care.

In Denmark we have an 18-month specialised training program for cancer nurses. Due to financial cutbacks, this training is now at risk and The Danish Cancer Nursing Society has a huge challenge to fight at every level of the political arena to keep this education, which is the only specialised education for cancer nurses to combine theoretical and clinical training to such high standards of excellence.

The Danish Cancer Nursing Society is a part of the European teamwork and we think this is a great opportunity to work more closely together. You will find a link to our society´s website, but it will be in Danish, so if you would like any further information or connect with us in any way, please send an email to our President Hanne Nafei hanne.nafei@gmail.com.
