EONS and the Teenage Cancer Trust

The second EONS/Teenage Cancer Trust Nursing Leadership Summit was building on the work of the 2014 event in helping to develop a Europe-wide network of cancer nurses who work with teenagers and young adults. Everybody taking part in the workshop either has, or seeks to have, a leadership role in this field.

A group dinner on the evening before the workshop was a chance to make less formal connections with colleagues in other countries.

On the day, the focus was practical: participants were there to develop their leadership skills and clarify what leadership in cancer nursing means for them personally. Participants had been asked beforehand to do a tough piece of “homework”: each person had to ask five colleagues for feedback on their leadership style. They also had to complete a questionnaire on management style and identify an issue to work on during the workshop. This preparation meant that the workshop itself was tailored to specific issues for each person in their own workplace.

Award-winning business coach Anne Mulliner also got the group talking about what values motivate them. Discussions on motivation and personal strengths were linked to the broader aim of promoting leadership in the field of teenage cancer care.

Feedback on the event was extremely positive and delegates commented that they will remain in touch with each other, helping to maintain a network of nurse leaders in this field.

The facilitators of the 2015 event are planning future initiatives to build on this important work.
