Breast cancer in elderly patients: the final review results

Thursday 15 September 2011

A final review of a 1982 trial on elderly breast cancer patients has been published. The trial involved 200 patients, all aged 70 or over, with operable breast cancer, and was designed to compare the efficacy of tamoxifen and surgery. The final review found that all patients in the original study have died, and nearly 60% of these died of causes unrelated to breast cancer. The authors of the review conclude that long-term survival is possible in a significant number of patients.
