Young arthritis sufferers can safely have HPV vaccine

Sunday 25 September 2011

A Dutch study shows that sufferers of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) can receive the HPV vaccine, since this has been shown to be safe and effective in sufferers of the condition. The HPV vaccine gives young women protection against the human papilloma virus, which can cause cervical cancer. However, the study did suggest that sufferers of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) may receive less protection from the vaccine.
