Youth alone does not mandate mastectomy

Two studies suggest that young women with breast cancer do not necessarily require mastectomy purely because of their age. The two US studies suggest that there is no significant difference in survival rates and recurrence rates between young women who had a mastectomy and those who had breast-conserving surgery. The study challenges the conventional wisdom that young patients should always have a mastectomy rather than a lumpectomy.
