Calling Young Cancer Nurses
Sara Torcato Parreira
Sara Torcato Parreira, EONS’ Young Cancer Nurse (YCN) representative on the EONS Board, is working to build a broad YCN community across Europe. She has written to all EONS national societies seeking to recruit a network of YCN representatives - one from each country. Sara said: “I am delighted to announce this further step towards supporting YCNs! This enthusiastic group of YCNs will continue to raise the profile of young cancer nurses and cancer nursing!”

Major review highlights cancer nurse impact
RECaN logoWe all know that cancer nurses make a hugely important contribution to cancer care, but now a major review is going to look at HOW cancer nurses have an impact on care quality, patient outcomes and overall experience of cancer. The review is part of the Recognising European Cancer Nursing (RECaN) project led by EONS. Evidence from it will be used to determine implications for clinical practice and to inform future programme and policy decisions in Europe.

President’s blog asks tough question
Do we work in a death-denying culture? This is the important subject of EONS President Danny Kelly’s latest blog. While many of our patients will now enjoy cure, others will eventually succumb to their cancer: Danny asks whether the culture of modern cancer care allows us to manage this outcome, or whether it encourages us more often to avoid it.

Board Member joins leadership programme
EONS Executive Board Member Paul Trevatt has been accepted to attend a transformational leadership programme facilitated by the International Council of Nurses (ICN) this autumn. Paul said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for me to grow as a nurse leader and to share with nurse leaders from across the world all EONS’ exciting recent projects and activities - from RECaN, to the European Young Cancer Nurse programme, to our first European Cancer Nursing Day on May 18. I’ll also be flying the flag for cancer nurses and ensuring that cancer care is highlighted as a global healthcare priority.”

Nominations for 2nd round of elections: deadline 17 August
Nominations are now open for the second set of EONS Executive Board elections of 2017. Due to the further vacancy that has arisen as a result of the election of Andreas Charalambous as President-Elect, EONS is seeking to elect a new Board Member, ideally with an interest in the Research role. All EONS full members can submit their nomination until Thursday 17 August 2017. As of 21 August, all full members will be informed about the candidate(s) and invited by email to vote.

EONS General Meeting - 19 November, The Netherlands
We would like to remind you that the EONS General Meeting will take place on the morning of Sunday 19 November 2017, before the start of the EONS Leadership Summit. The venue will be the Reehorst Hotel, in Ede, near Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Full members are invited to join this meeting in order to approve the 2017 election results. Other EONS members are also welcome to join as observers. If you intend to come, please contact the EONS secretariat on eons.secretariat@cancernurse.eu ideally before 25 September 2017.

Leadership Summit - Every nurse can be a leader
The EONS Leadership Summit will take place on Sunday 19 and Monday 20 November 2017 in Ede, near Amsterdam, The Netherlands - and you should by now have been informed about the event by email. It is aimed at cancer nurses, staff members, nurses in leadership positions and delegates of the EONS cancer nursing societies. The theme of the summit is ‘Every Nurse Can Be a Leader’, covering a variety of topics such as leading the team, effective communication in cancer care, profiling yourself as a leader, learning about your strengths and weaknesses. More information about the summit, the programme and how to register will be available on the EONS website shortly. In the meantime, please save the dates.

Chemotherapy may spread cancer
Chemotherapy could allow cancer to spread and trigger more aggressive tumours a new study suggests. Researchers in the US studied the impact of drugs on patients with breast cancer and found medication increases the chance of cancer cells migrating to other parts of the body, where they are almost always lethal.

Detecting skin cancer metastasis before it happens
Scientists in Spain have found a way to detect skin cancer spread (metastasis) before the process even happens. The researchers at the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO) developed special bioluminescent mice, called ‘MetAlert’ mice, which ‘glow’ to show how the skin cancer cells prepare the surrounding areas prior to beginning to metastasise.

Alcohol and digestive cancers
A new United European Gastroenterology report examines the link between alcohol and digestive cancers. The European region has the highest levels of alcohol consumption in the world, with one fifth of the population aged 15 and above drinking heavily at least once a week. As a result, the continent also has the highest proportion of total ill health and premature death directly linked to alcohol. Alcohol consumption is a known risk factor for digestive cancers, including oesophageal, liver, pancreatic, colorectal and gastric cancer.
