Congratulations to winners Of 1st Round Of Board Elections!
Andreas Charalambous has been voted the new EONS President-Elect and Wendy Oldenmenger has been elected the new EONS Board Member in the first set of EONS Executive Board elections for 2017.

The EONS membership will confirm the result and the appointments at the EONS General Meeting during the EONS Advisory Council meeting/ Leadership Summit in Ede, The Netherlands, on 19 November.

Nominations open in further round of elections
Nominations are now open for the second set of EONS Executive Board elections of 2017. Due to the further vacancy that has arisen as a result of the election of Andreas Charalambous as President-Elect, EONS is seeking to elect a new Board Member, ideally with an interest in the Research role. Nominations are now open until Thursday 17 August 2017. All full members of EONS (individual members and National Oncology Nursing Society members) are invited to submit their nominations for the role.

EONS to recruit new Chief Operating Officer
EONS wishes to appoint a dynamic and highly skilled Chief Operating Officer (COO) to help take the charity forward. EONS exists to support cancer nurses across Europe. The new COO will work closely with the three Presidents, EONS Board and Team to meet our strategic goals, identify fundraising opportunities and build our membership. Closing date: Midnight 14 July 2017. Interviews will be held on 10 August in Stockholm. Applications should be sent to: eons.secretariat@cancernurse.eu.

Get funding to grow your skills
A new ESO-EONS Clinical Fellowship Programme offers cancer nurses the chance to spend time in a clinical setting in another country. The European School of Oncology (ESO) will refund relevant travel costs and offer a grant of 2000 Euros for each 4-week period. The fellowship programme aims to help reduce the variability in outcomes of cancer care between countries and regions. The deadline has been extended to 10 July.

Research Travel Grant: recipients selected
Applications for the 2017 EONS Research Travel Grant have been reviewed by the judging panel and two applicants have been awarded the grant of EUR 2,500 each. The grant was created to enable a novice or established researcher to spend time with an established researcher or research group in another country, in order to build collaborations and facilitate research proposal development.

EONS support helps nurse secure PhD
EONS research support has helped Dr Ylva Hellstadius, an EONS nurse and PhD student at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, on her way to being an accomplished researcher and making a real difference to patient care. Ylva Hellstadius took part in the second EONS Research Workshop in Stockholm in 2012 and was the recipient of an EONS Research Travel Grant a few years later. Ylva’s thesis explored psychological distress in patients with oesophageal cancer. Congratulations to Ylva on successfully completing her PhD. Apply for an EONS Award or Grant

EONS General Meeting - 19 November, The Netherlands
The EONS General Meeting will take place on the morning of Sunday 19 November, before the start of the EONS Leadership Summit. The venue will be the Reehorst hotel in Ede, near Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Full members are invited to join this meeting in order to approve the 2017 election results. Other EONS members are also welcome to join as observers. If you intend to come, please contact the EONS secretariat on eons.secretariat@cancernurse.eu ideally before 25 September 2017.

Leadership Summit - every nurse can be a leader
The EONS Leadership Summit will take place on Sunday 19 and Monday 20 November 2017 in Ede, near Amsterdam, The Netherlands. It is aimed at cancer nurses, staff members, nurses in leadership positions and delegates of the EONS cancer nursing societies. The theme of the summit is Every Nurse Can Be a Leader, covering a variety of topics such as leading the team, effective communication in cancer care, profiling yourself as a leader, learning about your strengths and weaknesses. More information about the summit, the programme and how to register will be available in due course but in the meantime, please save the dates.

EJON’s impact is highest ever

The European Journal of Oncology Nursing (EJON) 2016 Impact Factor has been released: it is 1.826, the highest ever. The Impact Factor measures the number of times articles from a journal are cited in other publications, and thus the journal’s academic relevance and high standing. EONS individual members can access EJON using their membership number.

RESEARCH
Less chemo may be best choice for colon patients
A shorter course of chemotherapy following surgery may be the preferred treatment for some patients with colon cancer, results of an international collaborative study suggest. Analysis suggested that, for a large percentage of these patients - those whose cancer was considered to be at low risk of recurrence - three months of adjuvant chemotherapy may be enough.

RESEARCH
Prostate cancer blood test to transform treatment
Scientists have developed a simple three-in-one blood test they believe could transform treatment of advanced prostate cancer, helping to extend or save lives. The test, developed by researchers at the Institute of Cancer Research and the Royal Marsden NHS foundation trust, in London, picks out men suitable for treatment with Olaparib, part of a revolutionary class of drugs called “PARP-inhibitors” which stops damaged cells from repairing themselves.

Time to integrate cancer care
The European CanCer Organisation (ECCO) has published a new position statement- Integrated Cancer Care: Bringing Primary Care and Secondary Care Together. Unifying the views of its 25 pan-European member organisations, the statement emphasises the necessity of achieving integrated care to improve outcomes for cancer patients. The gaps in communication and care that cancer patients too often encounter when transferring between hospital and home can no longer remain unaddressed.

Cooperation between EU health systems
EU Member State Governments have published jointly agreed conclusions on achieving voluntary cooperation between national health systems.

Guidance on use of sunbeds
The World Health Organisation has published a new report highlighting the need for Government policies to limit use of sunbeds to prevent increasing rates of skin cancer.
