EONS General Meeting – See you there?
We’d love to see you at the EONS General Meeting on the morning of Sunday 19 November before the start of the EONS Leadership Summit. The draft agenda is now available for this meeting. The venue is the Reehorst Hotel in Ede, near Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Full members are invited to join this meeting to approve the 2017 election results. Other EONS members are also welcome to join as observers. If you intend to come, please contact the EONS secretariat on ideally by 9 November 2017.

The European Cancer Patient Coalition (ECPC) together with Eurocarers has presented a new ‘White Paper on Informal Carers of People with Cancer’ in the European Parliament. Carers fulfil a vital role for our patients and health systems. Unfortunately and unfairly, however, this role is often thankless and characterised by vulnerability and strain. The White Paper highlights the achievements and shortcomings of the current policy framework and seeks to identify ways forward.

Fake news about cancer
A UK charity is aiming to combat “fake news” about cancer on the internet by appointing a full-time nurse to provide accurate information. Macmillan said two-fifths of people with cancer looked up information about their diagnosis on the internet. It said unverified sites were often leaving patients needlessly frightened or trying bogus treatments. Do you know where to advise your patients to go for accurate online information? Here is a good place to start:

ECCO is giving its support to a new campaign – #EU4Health – to ensure that the European Union (EU) steps up coordinated EU action to tackle cross-border health challenges. Led by the European Public Health Alliance (EPHA) and the European Patients’ Forum (EPF) the campaign calls for a more ambitious EU health agenda, better recognising the value that comes from cross-border coordination, exchange of data, evidence and practices in the health domain.

Yes, but does it work?
A number of cancer drugs entered the European market “without evidence of benefit on survival or quality of life”, researchers have said. A new study, published in The British Medical Journal (BMJ), found that of cancer drugs approved by the European Medicines Agency between 2009 and 2013, 57% (39/68) had no supporting evidence of better survival or quality of life when they entered the market. After an average of five years of follow up, only half had shown a survival or quality of life gain over existing treatments or placebos.
