2018 ESO-EONS Masterclass – Apply now!

Next year’s ESO-EONS Masterclass in Oncology Nursing will take place in Berlin, Germany, from 24-29 March 2018. Apply now for this renowned career-boosting opportunity. The programme is designed for European advanced cancer nurses as a multi-professional joint event. This intensive course in up-to-date oncology will create a collective spirit of teaching and learning to improve clinical skills and patient care. Deadline: 1 December.

EONS Research Travel Grant 2018 – Two awards of €2,500

With an EONS Research Travel Grant you can go anywhere in the world to develop your research skills! ECND 2017 – How did we do?
European Cancer Nursing Day (ECND) on 18 May 2017 made a huge impact – raising the profile of cancer nurses and calling for their contribution to be better understood and valued. It was also great fun, with EONS members across Europe posting photos of their activities on social media to celebrate this important day. EONS has now carried out an evaluation of the day. (Please put next year’s ECND date – 18 May 2018 – in your diary.)

E-Learning on treatments for metastic breast cancer

ecancer has produced a new, free e-learning module for nurses: Breast Cancer CDK 4/6 Inhibitors. This one-hour module guides you through the latest treatments available, with engaging mini-lectures, interactive slides and a clinically adapted case scenario. It includes quizzes to test your knowledge as you progress through the sections. You will receive one CME point upon successful completion. (The module is based on the satellite symposium held at the EONS 2016 Congress in Dublin, Republic of Ireland.) ICN appoints Interim CEO from Ireland
The International Council of Nurses (ICN) has appointed Professor Thomas Kearns as interim Chief Executive Officer until a new CEO is appointed. Professor Kearns is taking a sabbatical from his role as the Executive Director of the Faculty of Nursing & Midwifery at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.

WHO: Workforce is ‘beating heart’ of any health system
WHO European Region has agreed to transform the health workforce to ensure that it is sustainable and able to respond to current and future health needs. “The health workforce is the beating heart of any health system, and the cornerstone of universal health coverage,’ said Dr Hans Kluge, Director of the Division of Health Systems and Public Health, as he presented “Towards a sustainable health workforce in the WHO European Region: a framework for action”.

‘Pen’ pinpoints cancerous tissue in 10 seconds
A new handheld device can identify cancerous tissue in 10 seconds, according to scientists at the University of Texas. They say it could make surgery to remove a tumour quicker, safer and more precise. And they hope it would avoid the “heartbreak” of leaving any of the cancer behind. Tests, published in Science Translational Medicine, suggest the technology is 96% accurate.

EU staff in UK health sector need clarity
The UK’s NHS Confederation is pressing the UK government to provide reassurance to the 165,000 EU staff who work for the health and social care sector in the UK and are anxious about whether they will be able to remain in the future and under what conditions.

Research Group update – Metaphors in palliative care
Ulrika ÖstlundUlrika Östlund of the EONS Research Working Group introduces a project that she believes is both interesting and important: Charlotte Hommerberg, the project’s leader, looks at how metaphors can have powerful effects on the way we understand and experience life, particularly in the kind of emotionally and psychologically challenging situation that confronts patients with chronic cancer.
