EONS Leadership Summit – Sign up now!
EONS Leadership SummitDon’t miss the EONS Leadership Summit on Sunday 19 and Monday 20 November 2017 in Ede, near Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The programme is now available and registration is open! The purpose of this exciting summit – which is aimed at cancer nurses, nurse managers, policy makers, educators and nurse directors – is to advance nurses’ capacity and effectiveness as leaders. It will cover a range of important topics presented by professional nurse leaders. Deadline for registration is 15 October 2017.

EONS General Meeting – Are you coming?
The EONS General Meeting will take place on the morning of Sunday 19 November before the start of the EONS Leadership Summit. The venue is the Reehorst Hotel in Ede, near Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Full members are invited to join this meeting to approve the 2017 election results. Other EONS members are also welcome to join as observers. If you intend to come, please contact the EONS secretariat on ideally before 25 September 2017.

Executive Board Elections Second Round: Use your vote!
Picture of a voting ballot paperFour nominations have been received for the role of Board member. If you are an EONS full member, you should have received your email invitation to cast your vote. This must reach the EONS Secretariat by 9:00 CET on Thursday 14 September 2017 in order to be counted. Voting is only open to full members – that is, National Oncology Nursing Societies and individual members. (Your membership subscription for April 2017-March 2018 needs to be paid for your vote to be accepted.) We look forward to receiving your vote!

EONS Appoints new Chief Operating Officer
Emma WoordfordEONS is delighted to announce the appointment of a new Chief Operating Officer (COO) to help take the charity forward. Emma Woodford is an experienced senior advocate and programme manager with more than 20 years’ experience in the charity/NGO sector. She has worked in Brussels as a health advocate at the Association of European Cancer Leagues (ECL) and with cancer nurses, prevention managers and oncologists on a number of projects, including facilitating MEPS Against Cancer in the European Parliament. Emma has also been an Interim Secretary General of the European Public Health Alliance.

EONS-led research in world-leading journal
RECaN logoAn article reporting the protocol for an important study led by EONS and supported by ECCO has recently been accepted for publication in the Journal of Advanced Nursing. “Recognizing European cancer nursing: Protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis of the evidence of effectiveness and value of cancer nursing” is now available to read online. The study is part of the Recognising European Cancer Nursing (RECaN) initiative.

Wendy OldenmengerWendy Oldenmenger reports how a fascinating recent study aimed to understand how the hope and motivation of patients considering phase I trial participation are affected by psychological factors, such as coping strategies, locus of control (LoC) and general well-being as measured by the quality of life (QoL). It found that hope significantly predicted the motivation to participate in phase I trials.

ECCO statement on access to innovationA major step has been taken towards improving patient access to innovation. ECCO (European CanCer Organisation) has published a new position paper on this pressing healthcare issue. It sets out a clear manifesto that should ultimately improve outcomes for patients.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has released for public consultation a concept paper on the development and lifecycle of personalised medicines and companion diagnostics that measure predictive biomarkers which, in turn, help to assess the most likely response to a particular treatment.
