EONS11 – Registration now open!
EONS 11 and ESMO 2018 - registration now openRegistration for EONS11 at ESMO 2018 is now open! Places will go fast, so don’t miss it! REGISTER NOW. Our conference, in Munich from 20-22 October, will focus on cancer nursing leadership, symptom management, patient safety, new cancer research and cancer nurse roles. Profit from the great offer of a fixed registration fee for all cancer nurses right up to the closing date. The call for abstracts related to these five themes is also now open (deadline 9 May) – please submit your abstract here. (And, don’t forget that nurses attending EONS11 will also have access to all ESMO 2018 sessions, posters, submitted abstracts and teaching sessions right through from 19-23 October.)

A Novice Research Dissemination Award is open to applications from nurses with no experience of presenting their research outside their own country and less than five years’ experience of research: to apply, simply tick the box at the end of the abstract submission process (see above item). The award includes travel, accommodation and congress registration fee. The two winners will be asked to briefly present their results at the award session during the cancer nursing conference. There is also an ECND competition that you can enter related to involvement in European Cancer Nursing Day on 18 May. There are two categories ‘Best event’ and ‘Most creative social media’, with two travel bursaries of € 600 available, one for each category.

This year we are highlighting the importance of recognising the specialisation of cancer nursing with a high-profile event at the European Parliament; and supporting education and training with the launch of the new EONS Cancer Nursing Education Framework. Make sure you take part by sharing your unique cancer nurse stories, creative pictures, inspirational videos and messages across social media and especially at #ECND2018. Find out more about how to get involved here and via the ECND website. EONS’ National Societies will be planning events to celebrate 18 May too – ask what’ll be happening to mark the day, and join in!

Participants in the 2018 ESO-EONS MasterclassThe 2018 ESO-EONS Masterclass in Oncology Nursing was held in Germany at the end of March. It was attended by European advanced cancer nurses and is a multi-professional event with opportunities for joint learning. Five intensive days of full immersion in up-to-date cancer care were designed to improve clinical skills and patient care.

The EONS Advocacy Working Group has three seats available for new members! The group ensures that the interests of cancer nurses are communicated at a strategic and policy level. Applicants should submit a CV and a letter saying why you want to join the group to Mariska Mooijekind, Working Groups Manager, at We are also delighted to announce that Helena Ullgren, from Sweden, will be the new Vice Chair of the Advocacy Working Group, with effect from 11 May. A big ‘thank you’ to the outgoing Co-Chair Aoife McNamara for her valued work with the group.

It’s all change on the EONS Education Working Group. Leaving the group is Cristina Correia de Lacerda, Anita Margulies and Paula Mitchell, replaced by new members Celia Diez de los Rios, Andrea Necasova and Virpi Sulosaari. On the Research Working Group Nuria Domenech Climent, Iveta Nohavova and Lena Sharp have handed over to Melanie Charambous, Amanda Drury and Marlies Peters. A big ‘thank you’ to all leavers for their valued contribution over the years – and a big welcome to our new members!

The European School of Oncology (ESO) has pioneered the concept of live online sessions for cancer professionals. These e-sessions include debates, conference highlights, teaching sessions and more. Some e-sessions are hosted with EONS, and these tend to be of great relevance to your nursing practice. The next one for your diary is Session 439 – Recognising Oncologic Emergencies on 17 May 2018. A video of a recent Refresher course on Systematic Reviews in Cancer Care, Guidelines and Research is also now available. You can access these sessions free as an EONS member.

Other News

A team of researchers has identified a long sought-after connection between how cancer cells use the sugar glucose to generate energy – the Warburg pathway – and cancer growth. The researchers, at Baylor College of Medicine and Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, USA, found that PFKFB4, an enzyme in the pathway, can activate SRC-3, a potent driver of breast cancer. The study appears in the journal Nature.

A new epidemiological study has suggested mortality rates for many tumour types will continue to decline across the EU in 2018. Exceptions are pancreatic cancer and lung cancer in women. Improved treatment and – above age 50 years – organised screening may account for recent favourable colorectal cancer trends.

Coffee sold in California must carry a cancer warning, a court has ruled. The judge in Los Angeles said Starbucks and about 90 other coffee sellers had failed to warn customers about a potentially toxic compound that is produced during the roasting process. The firms were sued by a California-based, non-profit group over the chemical acrylamide. The group argued that as acrylamide is regarded as carcinogenic under state law, it should be sold with a warning.
