Have you signed up for EONS11 at ESMO 2018 in Munich yet? Here are some reasons why you mustn’t miss it, from some of the many nurses who loved our last conference:
‘It made us feel we were part of a family – the European family of nurses!’
‘It was so great to be bringing back good ideas to our wards!’
‘We wished we could clone ourselves to attend all the sessions!’
‘Every congress just gets better and better!’

This time, our fabulous three-day nursing track (20-22 October) focuses on symptom management, patient safety, cancer nurse roles, leadership and new cancer research. Find out more and book your place now. See you there!

Lena Sharp and Danny Kelly
You will hear EONS President Lena Sharp (left) and Past-President Danny Kelly (right) reveal the fascinating findings of Phase 1&2 of our groundbreaking Recognising European Cancer Nursing (RECaN) project. In Phase 2, EONS looked at four countries – Estonia, Germany, Netherlands and UK – and gained valuable insights on many key cancer nursing issues in each, especially safety, working conditions, recognition and management. Lena said: “There were some big differences, but in all countries we found devoted cancer nurses who love their jobs, who have important relationships with their patients but who are, sadly, overloaded with work.” The EONS Nursing Track is 20-22 October (ESMO 2018, 19-23). We have negotiated a special registration rate for nurses of €404.60. Book your place NOW as hotel places in Munich are going fast. Fill in a quick form to register and find a hotel today.

The EONS General Meeting (GM) will take place on the morning of Friday 19 October at the EONS11/ESMO conference venue before the start of the ESMO Congress. As a member of EONS, you will be able to hear about the work our organisation has been doing on your behalf over the last year and learn about our plans for the future. You will also be able to use your vote and participate in our decision-making process. More will follow about this, so stay tuned to the newsletter and the EONS website but please put the date in your diary now! NB: All those wishing to attend should register for EONS11, and let us know you are coming to the GM by contacting

Young cancer nurses
EONS is involved in the European project iPAAC (Innovative Partnership for Action Against Cancer), co-funded by the Health Programme of the European Union. Our Young Cancer Nurse (YCN) ambassador, Sara Torcato Parreira (pictured with the group, front row, second from right), is representing EONS in the Work Package 10 “Governance of Integrated and Comprehensive Cancer Care”. The aim of this work package is to develop practical instructions for the successful governance and steering of cancer care in all member states, based on recommendations developed during CanCon. This working group will analyse national cancer plans, existing models of PROM & PREMs and develop quality indicators and patient pathways for specific tumours, in order to create a framework for a Comprehensive Cancer Care Network.

Members of AHOP
The Austrian Association of Hematology and Oncology Nurses (AHOP) was founded in 1994, and since then the number of members has increased to 560. AHOP’s guiding theme is to raise the quality in hemato-oncology nursing and the belief that oncology nurses need to be recognised as equal partners with patients and doctors. To reach this goal, AHOP has started several ambitious activities…

In a new Research Update, EONS Research Working Group member Melanie Charalambous draws attention to a study she has been involved in that looks at the role of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in symptom management. More specifically, she reports on a randomised controlled trial to examine the effect of the use of thyme honey in minimising radiation-induced oral mucositis, one of the main side effects during and after treatment, in head and neck cancer patients.

EONS members are asked to help increase knowledge of what patients know about cancer-associated thrombosis, in order to better represent their voices and interests when dealing with policymakers and stakeholders. The European Cancer Patient Coalition Patient Survey on Cancer Associated Thrombosis has been launched in 6 different languages. Cancer-Associated Thrombosis is one of the deadliest complications in people living with cancer and yet, it is very seldom discussed. Please disseminate the survey among patients and caregivers to help ECPC address this important issue. (The deadline is 10 August so urgent action is much appreciated.)

Improving the measurement of quality cancer care, addressing financial discrimination endured by cancer survivors and better integrating primary care to improve cancer care are the three major themes of the draft ECCO 2018 European Cancer Summit resolutions, now open for consultation until 21 August 2018. ECCO President and Summit co-chair Professor Philip Poortmans, said: “I am urging everyone with an interest in quality cancer care, survivorship and cancer care delivery to take some time over the summer to review the resolutions, consider where strength could be added, and respond to the consultation. Then, come and join us in Vienna, be part of the conversation, and let us join forces to bring these aspirations of improvement into reality.”
