EONS Newsletter

Welcome

Helen Oswald, EONS Communication ManagerThe festive season is nearly here. What a wonderful year this has been for EONS! The highlights were of course ECND2018 in May and EONS11 in October, with lots of other great things going on throughout 2018 as well. Plans are underway to make 2019 just as fantastic and to build on our work to ensure that cancer nursing is recognised as a specialisation throughout Europe. But for now it’s time to rest, reflect and spend time with family and friends. EONS would like to send you the warmest wishes for a truly refreshing break.

SAFETY IS KEY – FOR NURSES AND FOR PATIENTS
Safety materials
One of the objectives of the EONS Advocacy Working Group (AWG) is to raise awareness on safety in cancer care across Europe, and the AWG is currently exploring what is being done in this very important area – considering which organisations we could work with and examining the current situation in countries across Europe. By ‘safety’ we mean both occupational safety and patient safety: an article in the magazine of the European Parliament has highlighted the risks healthcare workers face and is calling for more action. Watch this space for how EONS plans to make a difference.

BIOSIMILARS IN CANCER NURSING – SURVEY
More and more biosimilars for cancer are emerging as patents on widely used biological drugs expire. EONS and ESMO would like to collect information to understand the current knowledge, use and acceptance of biosimilars in cancer nursing. We also want to know whether there is a need for additional cancer nurse support and training on biosimilars in cancer treatment. Please help by taking our 10 minute survey.

PANCREATIC CANCER – MAJOR NEW REPORT
Pancreatic cancer has the lowest survival rate of all cancers in Europe. Responsible for over 95,000 EU deaths every year, life expectancy at the time of diagnosis is just 4.6 months. Improvements in patient outcomes have largely stood still for the past four decades. A new report ‘Pancreatic Cancer Across Europe – Taking a united stand’ provides a concise overview on the state of pancreatic cancer across the continent and calls for six initiatives to transform pancreatic cancer outcomes by 2035.
