Now the new year is underway, we are excited about our plans for the coming months. You’ll read about some the key ones in this newsletter, not least our two Masterclasses aimed at increasing learning and sharing among European cancer nurses, and of course, the European Cancer Nursing Day on 18 May – which is all about making sure our work gets the recognition and status it deserves, not just for us but for the good of our patients. In “Other News”, we have a special focus on prevention and how alcohol consumption, tobacco use and poor diet are linked to cancer.

EUROPEAN CANCER NURSING DAY 2018 – SAVE THE DATE

If there’s one date you must have in your diary for this year, it’s 18 May! That’s European Cancer Nursing Day! Our first ECND last year was a huge triumph and the happy memories are still with us. We made a big impact in raising the profile of cancer nursing – and had great fun in the process. We’ll take social media by storm again this year – so make sure you’re ready! More updates on planned activities will follow, but until then, why not relive some of the best moments.


EONS MAGAZINE – NEW ISSUE OUT NOW!

The new edition of the EONS online magazine is now available for you to read and enjoy. It’s packed with in-depth reports and pictures from the Ede Leadership Summit and is an opportunity to learn and develop your own leadership skills, at any level. Articles cover top tips for leading the team, 360 degree feedback, working conditions, patient safety and much more. There's also an introduction to our new Cancer Nursing Framework (which replaces the former Curriculum) and our new President, Lena Sharp, looks to the future. Happy reading!


1ST ESO/EONS EASTERN EUROPE AND BALKAN REGION MASTERCLASS
Picture of Budapest, venue for the Eastern Europe and Balkan MasterclassThis Masterclass in Oncology Nursing is specifically designed to meet the educational needs of cancer nurses from Eastern Europe and the Balkan region. It will take place in Budapest, Hungary, from 20-22 September 2018. A maximum of €250 will be available as a contribution for travel support to participants not coming from the Budapest area. Deadline for applications is 31 May 2018.

EDUCATION WORKING GROUP NEW MEMBERS – APPLY BY END OF JANUARY
EONS Education Working Group helps cancer nurses across Europe develop their professional skills and knowledge. The Group is now looking for three new members. If you have a passion for supporting the learning of cancer nurses and a sound understanding of the delivery of education relevant to current clinical practice we'd love to hear from you!

ABC Alliance logoEONS has recently been accepted as an ABC (Advanced Breast Cancer) Global Alliance partner. The Alliance, established by the European School of Oncology, is committed to developing, promoting and supporting tangible improvements that will ultimately create awareness and improve and extend the lives of patients living with ABC worldwide.

MASTERCLASS 2018: APPLICANTS SELECTED
This year’s ESO-EONS Masterclass in Oncology Nursing is in Berlin, Germany, from 24-29 March. The programme is designed for European advanced cancer nurses as a multi-professional joint event to improve clinical skills and patient care. The applicants have now been selected by the EONS Masterclass committee. This was not an easy task as more than 90 applications were received! If you were not successful this time, don't worry, there'll be another chance next year.

RESEARCH TRAVEL GRANT 2018: RECIPIENT SELECTED
Applications for the 2018 EONS Research Travel Grant have been reviewed by the judging panel and the result will soon be available on the EONS website. The grant was created to enable a nurse researcher to spend time with an established researcher or research group in another country, in order to build collaborations and facilitate research proposal development. You can read about last year’s recipient, Jane Davies’, research trip to Australia in the new issue of the EONS Magazine.

WMA DECLARATION ON ALCOHOL AND CANCER
The burden of disease and injury associated with alcohol consumption is a critical challenge to global public health and development around the world. The World Medical Association declaration on alcohol is a statement of commitment to reducing excessive alcohol consumption and to promoting harm-reduction policies and other measures.

ALCOHOL DAMAGES DNA AND INCREASES CANCER RISK
Picture of wine bottlesScientists have shown how alcohol damages DNA in stem cells, helping to explain why drinking increases the risk of cancer, according to research part-funded by Cancer Research UK. Cancer nurses are increasingly understanding the importance of helping to educate patients by telling them about these discoveries.

IRELAND – ADVERTS MUST LINK ALCOHOL AND CANCER
In Ireland, a new Public Health (Alcohol) Bill, stipulates that all alcohol advertising must include health warnings about the link between drink and cancer. EONS is among many organisations and individuals arguing for more preventative measures to tackle the growing cancer burden. Have you thought of lobbying politicians in your own country to take steps like this?

STUDY AT THE CATALAN TOBACCO CONTROL UNIT
Members of the Tobacco Control Unit at the Catalan Institute of OncologyTwo pre-doctoral positions are now open for applicants at the Tobacco Control Unit at the Catalan Institute of Oncology. This programme is aimed at international early-stage researchers. Selected candidates will join the team for three years working under EurestPlus-Spain or QuitMental projects with the ultimate goal of gaining their PhD theses. The positions will be funded under INPhINIT programme. Candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Spain for more than 12 months in the three years immediately prior to the recruitment date. The deadline for application is 1 February 2018.


CANCER, POOR DIET AND OBESITY – TELL YOUR PATIENTS
Picture of unhealthy foodObesity is linked to diabetes, but it also a significant factor in some cancers. Food advertising, promotions and packaging all have a role to play in this, and lobbying is underway on these important issues. Cancer nurses can also help by informing patients of the risk to them and their children from junk food, over eating and obesity. In the UK, parents are being strongly encouraged to reduce the amount of sugary snacks they allow their children.

AWARENESS OF CANCER PREVENTION RISING
According to a recent online survey by the Association of the European Cancer Leagues, 82% of people understand that they can reduce their risk of getting cancer in the future by making changes to their lifestyle. This is an increase on the previous survey (in 2015) when the figure was 78%. However, understanding this and changing behaviour are two different things and there is often a gap. The survey was based on a total sample of 8,171 people (aged 18+) in Finland, France, Hungary, Portugal, Republic of Ireland, Spain, and the United Kingdom.

EUROPEAN ORAL CARE IN CANCER GUIDANCE – NOW IN ITALIAN
This guidance will assist in both planning and implementing oral care thereby preventing or reducing the severity of the side effects of cancer and its treatment. This new Italian translation is added to the existing versions available in English and Croation. Further translations may be added later this year.

BUILD RESEARCH SKILLS WITH EANS SUMMER SCHOOL
Picture of GhentThe European Academy of Nursing Science (EANS) Summer School is a unique opportunity for nurses undertaking doctoral studies to participate in a three year programme of annual summer schools. The 2018 EANS Summer School will be hosted by the University Centre for Nursing and Midwifery at the Ghent University in Belgium. The Summer School is from 2-13 July. Participants will learn mixed methods research skills to develop, test, evaluate and implement complex interventions in nursing. They will work alongside nurses from more than 20 European countries, thus gaining a powerful research network and preparing for future European collaborations. Deadline 31 January.
