The call for abstracts related to our five themes is now open: cancer nursing leadership, symptom management, patient safety, new cancer research and cancer nurse roles. The deadline for submissions is 9 May – please submit your abstract here. Registration for EONS11 will open in the second half of March. Keep an eye on the EONS website for more information. Nurses attending EONS11 will also have access to all ESMO sessions, posters, submitted abstracts and teaching sessions.

TWO CHANCES TO WIN FREE PLACES AT EONS11 AND ESMO 2018 CONGRESS

The award includes funding towards travel, accommodation and congress registration fee. The two winners will be asked to briefly present their results at the award session during the cancer nursing conference. There is also an ECND competition that you can enter related to involvement in European Cancer Nursing Day on 18 May. There are two categories ‘Best event’ and ‘Most creative social media’, with two travel bursaries of € 600 available, one for each category.

GET READY FOR EUROPEAN CANCER NURSING DAY 2018!
Banner for European Cancer Nursing DayEuropean Cancer Nursing Day (ECND) is on 18 May 2018. This major EONS event is a celebration of the role of cancer nurses across Europe. It highlights the importance of recognising the specialisation of cancer nursing and the need for further education and training. Promotion of ECND will start later this month through social media channels and the website, so keep an eye out for your chance to join the conversation and get involved. We will also be encouraging EONS National Societies to start planning their own events for 18 May too. Please participate in ECND 2018 by sharing your unique cancer nurse stories, creative pictures, inspirational videos and messages. Looking forward to seeing you for #ECND2018!

SUPPORTIVE CARE IN THE SPOTLIGHT
EONS raised awareness of the importance of supportive care in cancer among EU and national policymakers recently. Together with the European Cancer Patient Coalition, EONS held a roundtable discussion in Brussels to highlight this vital issue, including cancer-associated thrombosis and chemotherapy-induced and post-operative nausea and vomiting. Cancer nurses are vital for supportive care but need the right conditions, education and tools to give our patients proper information and guidance. A short report and a set of recommended actions will be produced. (The project is supported by Leo Pharma and Helsinn Healthcare.)

MICROTUMORS HELP SHOW IF DRUGS WILL WORK
A study, recently published in Science, showed that the creation of what researchers are calling microtumors can help predict drug effectiveness in cancer patients better than the current standard method of testing the drugs on rodents. Researchers took biopsies from 71 colorectal cancer patients and made “cancer organoids,” or cell culture models of cancerous organs. Researchers then treated these microtumors with drugs and observed the effectiveness of treatments in the laboratory.
