ECND2018 COMING! FRIDAY 18 MAY IS OUR BIG DAY!
Nurses celebrating European Cancer Nursing Day 2018We’re almost there! The second European Cancer Nursing Day (ECND) is on 18 May 2018. This year we are highlighting the importance of recognising the specialisation of cancer nursing with a high-profile event at the European Parliament, and supporting education and training with the launch of the new EONS Cancer Nursing Framework. ECND Task Group Chair Aoife McNamara said: “At the heart of the day is you, the cancer nurse and we’d love to see social media flooded with pictures of cancer nurses from all around Europe celebrating their profession on the day. Make sure you take part by sharing your unique cancer nurse stories, creative pictures, inspirational videos and messages across social media and especially at #ECND2018. It’s easy to do – everything you need is available in our handy guide on how to get involved and via the ECND website.”

EONS PRESIDENT SPEAKS ON PREVENTION AT MAJOR CONFERENCE
EONS President Lena SharpIn April, EONS President Lena Sharp attended an alcohol policy conference in Washington D.C. along with Lisa Kennedy Sheldon from the American Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) and EONS COO Emma Woodford. Lena was invited to speak about cancer nurses’ role in cancer prevention. Lena said: “Alcohol is an important risk factor for cancer and we need to raise awareness both among the public and health care staff. Nurses are the largest group of health care professions and the most trusted profession in many countries, which gives us a unique possibility to impact both primary and secondary cancer prevention, aiming at patients, their families and also staff.”

EONS PROSTATE CANCER APP ON ITS WAY
EONS is currently working on developing and testing an App for use by nurses working with patients diagnosed with prostate cancer. The App will provide information on addressing the unmet needs of this group of patients as well as their informal caregivers. Drawing on previous research studies, and systematically reviewing the relevant literature and current international guidelines, it will provide evidence-based information on how patients’ specific needs can be best met in the clinical context. The App will be available next year.

MISTAKEN BELIEFS ABOUT CAUSES OF CANCER
Many people have a mistaken belief in mythical causes of cancer according to new research published today in the European Journal of Cancer. Researchers at the UK’s University College London and the University of Leeds surveyed 1,330 people in England and found that more than 40% wrongly thought that stress (43%) and food additives (42%) caused cancer. Cancer nurses have an important role to play in increasing public understanding about cancer and some of the real causes, such as obesity, alcohol, smoking and poor diet.
