EONS11 Conference – ‘THE BEST YET!’
Pictures from the EONS11 Conference
The EONS11 conference at ESMO 2018 Congress was ‘the best yet’! The EONS11 three-day nursing track (20-22 October) offered a packed programme focusing on five major themes: cancer nursing leadership, symptom management, patient safety, new cancer research and cancer nurse roles. Participants also benefited from sharing ESMO 2018 medical oncology sessions and from a number of sponsored satellite symposia on important cancer nursing topics. The conference provided great opportunities for networking and sharing too. If you weren’t able to come this time, or want to revisit the wonderful memories, you can get a flavour of EONS11 on Twitter at #EONS11, on www.facebook.com/cancernurseEU and at www.instagram.com/eu_oncology_nursing_society/.
A special issue of the EONS Magazine will report on the conference in late 2018/early 2019.

She currently works at the Danish National Centre for Grief and was previously head of education for advanced cancer nurses in Copenhagen and chief consultant at the Danish Nursing Council. ‘WORKING TOGETHER IN THE BEST INTERESTS OF OUR PATIENTS’
Medical professionals at ESMO 2018 and EONS11
This year, for the first time, EONS11 was held during the ESMO 2018 Congress. In addition to facilitating multi-professional team working and networking, this exciting collaboration offered unique educational opportunities for both nurses and medical oncologists. In a fascinating article in ESMO Magazine, three representatives from EONS share their thoughts on this highly successful joint venture. One of them, EONS President Lena Sharp, says: “As we see it, doctors and nurses are the foundation of cancer care, so it is important that we all work together in the best interests of our patients; so far it has been an extremely positive experience.” We also hear from Anita Margulies, Sara Parreira and ESMO President-Elect and ESMO 2018 Scientific Chair, Solange Peters, on the value of this groundbreaking collaboration.

SPANISH SOCIETY WELCOMES NEW BOARD

The Spanish Society of Oncology Nursing (SEEO) has a new board (pictured). President Angeles Peñuelas Saiz  said: “The new board aims to help Spanish oncology nurses become leaders in cancer care and ensure that all people affected by cancer benefit from the care of specialised nurses. The SEEO shares EONS’ mission, vision and values. We aim to reinforce communication ties across Europe and support the working groups to achieve their ends. At the same time, we want to spread the word about EONS so that more European nurses become interested in active participation in EONS.” Nuria Doménech Climent is Vice President, Nieves Gil Gómez is Secretary.

CANCER NURSES’ ‘OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION’ TO PATIENT GUIDES
A group of 17 cancer nurses appointed by EONS, who participated in reviewing the ESMO Guides for Patients have been praised for their ‘outstanding contribution’. The patient guides are designed to assist patients, their relatives and caregivers to better understand the nature of different types of cancer and to empower them when discussing the available treatment choices, side-effects and the different steps in care. The guides, based on the ESMO Guidelines, translate complex medical information into a language understood by patients but at a slightly higher level than the usual patient brochures. ESMO has collaborated with EONS on the guides since 2014.

BREAST CANCER – TARGETED DRUG MAY EXTEND LIFE
Combining a targeted drug with hormone therapy could extend survival for some women with advanced breast cancer, according to new trial results. Women taking the drug palbociclib (Ibrance) alongside hormone therapy lived 7 months longer on average than those taking hormone treatment and a placebo. But statistical tests showed that the results should be treated with caution. The drug had greater benefits in women whose breast cancer had previously responded to hormone therapy alone. These women lived an average of 10 months longer with the combination treatment than those treated with the hormone therapy, called fulvestrant (Faslodex), and the placebo. The results were published in the New England Journal of Medicine and presented at the ESMO Congress in Munich, Germany.

LUNG SCREENING COULD CUT DEATHS
Introducing lung screening for people at high risk of lung cancer could reduce deaths from the disease, according to new unpublished research. A European study found the number of lung cancer deaths among men at high risk of lung cancer was 26% lower in those who had screening with a CT scan. The first glimpse of the highly anticipated results suggested the benefits could be even greater in women. But experts said closer scrutiny of the data will be needed once it’s published.
