EONS Newsletter

Helen Oswald, EONS Communication ManagerAs busy cancer nurses, there are a lot of demands on our time and it can often be hard to find those moments to advance our skills and stay up to date by reading about the latest developments in the cancer care world. In this newsletter, you will find quick links to articles that highlight new developments and opportunities for learning. There is also a request to kindly participate in two surveys, as your knowledge can help your colleagues and EONS move forward with new initiatives to improve all our working lives. We hope you enjoy this month’s action-packed newsletter.

Portrait of Lena Sharp
Have you read the new blog from our President, Lena Sharp? In it, Lena reflects on all the fantastic things EONS achieved in 2018, and looks forward to all our exciting plans for this year – including European Cancer Nursing Day on 18 May and EONS12 @ ESMO 2019, in Barcelona this September (See below for more on both of these.) Lena says: “Looking to the future, I am confident that we will have a great year in 2019. A lot has been planned already. Hoping to meet you at the EONS events in 2019!”

European Cancer Nursing Day is on 18 May 2019
At EONS we are gearing up again for European Cancer Nursing Day on 18 May! The particular focus of this third edition of our celebration of cancer nursing will be on safety – for ourselves and for the patients we care for. This year is also special: we are holding an open competition among all our members to find out which country will host this year’s ECND! The first ECND (2017) was held in Estonia and had a tremendous impact on the educational opportunities for cancer nurses there. In 2018, in Brussels, we held meetings in the European Institutions and had our first Joint Working Group Meetings. Now it is up to you to decide what will be in store this year for #ECND19Go4Safety. If you would like the support and visibility that ECND can offer your work, please contact to request the Proposal Outline document in order to be able to put in your bid. The deadline to submit your proposal is 15 February 2019.

EONS12 takes place from 27 September to 1 October 2019
Cancer nursing, translating science into clinical practice and better safety for all
After our fantastic partnership with the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) for EONS11 in Munich in 2018, EONS will again be joining with our ESMO colleagues for a bumper 2019 conference this autumn, in Barcelona, Spain (27 September - 1 October). EONS12 will also have a special focus on patient and occupational safety. EONS President Lena Sharp and President-Elect Andreas Charalambous, who will chair the Scientific Committee, commented: “We're really excited to be holding our EONS Conference alongside the ESMO Congress again this year. Once more, it will offer rich opportunities for joint sessions, networking and a top quality packed programme – whether a clinical cancer nurse, an academic or a researcher you should seize the opportunity to be present!” Save the date and more information about registration soon on the EONS website.

The aim of this survey is to characterize the population of European Young Cancer Nurses (YCN) and to know their main strengths, needs and challenges. If you are under 35 years old and work with people affected by cancer please answer this survey: it is anonymous and it will only take a few minutes of your time. Thank you!

Members of the EONS Research Working Group
In this EONS Research Update, Professor Elisabeth Patiraki, of Athens, Greece, shares her enthusiasm about the great success of the innovative “Transformational Leadership Program for Palliative Care Nurses” in Greece. The main goal of this intensive program was to improve the quality of care for patients with complex, life threatening illness, to enhance cancer nurses’ skills in advocating about palliative care, and to transform them into leaders at clinical, research and management level.

More and more biosimilars for cancer are emerging as patents on widely used biological drugs expire. EONS and ESMO would like to collect information to understand the current knowledge, use and acceptance of biosimilars in cancer nursing. We also want to know whether there is a need for additional cancer nurse support and training on biosimilars in cancer treatment. Even if you currently know little about this subject, please help by taking our 10 minute survey.

Three positions on the EONS Executive Board will soon be open for nominations: President-Elect and two Board members. For the first time, we will be allocating one Board place (with voting rights as a full Board member) to a Young Cancer Nurse (YCN), so if you are under 35 at the time of your nomination and feel you have a lot to offer EONS, do look out for the call! More information about the elections, the election process and the nomination form will be available by the end of February, so keep an eye on your inbox and the EONS website!

Words about obesity
What is the role of a cancer nurse when it comes to lifestyle advice? Do you talk to your patients about the importance of diet, exercise, avoiding alcohol, giving up smoking? Obesity rates have risen in almost all EU countries since 2000 – particularly in Finland, Hungary, Luxembourg and the UK – while they remained stable between 2008 and 2014 in Belgium, the Czech Republic, Greece, Italy, Latvia and Poland.
