EONS Newsletter

Helen Oswald, EONS Communication ManagerWe hope you had a wonderful break over the festive period and have returned to work refreshed and inspired. Plans are underway to make 2019 another great year for EONS! We are delighted to announce that for our EONS12 conference we will be joining again with the ESMO Congress – in Barcelona this September. Another very important date for your calendar is, of course, #ECND2019 on 18 May. Our work with the RECaN project also continues, and this year we will be advocating for greater recognition of cancer nursing using the powerful results of Phases 1&2. Read about all of this, and more, in this newsletter.

European Cancer Nursing Day, 18 May 2019
At EONS we are gearing up again for European Cancer Nursing Day (#ECND2019) on 18 May! The particular focus of this third edition of our celebration of cancer nursing will be on safety – for ourselves and for the patients we care for. Safety must include everything that we do within the cancer care context and we believe that cancer nurses should be well protected and empowered to protect themselves. This year is also special: we are holding an open competition among all our members to find out which country will host this year’s ECND! The first ECND (2017) was held in Estonia and had a tremendous impact on the educational opportunities for cancer nurses there. In 2018, in Brussels, we held meetings in the European Institutions and had our first Joint Working Group Meetings…. It is up to you to decide what will be in store for #ECND2019. If you would like the support and visibility that ECND can offer your work, please contact for more information and to put in your bid.

EONS 12 Poster
Cancer nursing, translating science into clinical practice and better safety for all
After our fantastic partnership with the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) for EONS11 in Munich in 2018, EONS will again be joining with our ESMO colleagues for a bumper 2019 conference this autumn, in Barcelona, Spain. The tagline of ESMO 2019 Congress (27 Sept – 1 Oct) is ‘Translating science into better cancer patient care’ and we have designed our theme to fit with that, while retaining a strong focus on cancer nursing. EONS12 will also have a special focus on patient and occupational safety. EONS President Lena Sharp and President Elect Andreas Charalambous, who will chair the Scientific Committee, commented: “We're really excited to be holding our EONS Conference alongside the ESMO Congress again this year. Once more, it will offer rich opportunities for joint sessions, networking and a top quality packed programme – whether a clinical cancer nurse, an academic or a researcher you should seize the opportunity to be present!” Watch this space for specific dates and more information about registration.

EONS President Lena Sharp
Our President, Lena Sharp, has been interviewed by the prestigious magazine Cancer World. In the article, Lena talks about the important findings of the Recognising European Cancer Nursing (RECaN) project, led by EONS and supported by the European CanCer Organisation (ECCO). The overall goal is to increase recognition of the value and contribution of cancer nursing across Europe – focusing on expert cancer nursing skills, research, education, clinical leadership, strategy and management roles, advocacy, and policy development.

Front cover of the European Journal of Oncology Nursing
The European Journal of Oncology Nursing (EJON) is an international journal which publishes research of direct relevance to patient care, nurse education, management and policy development. You can now read the December 2018 issue and if you missed the October one, you can catch up on that too. The journal is a great way to find out all the latest and is free to EONS members. Delegates at the confernce in Bethlehem
EONS has a close relationship with the development of cancer nursing in Palestine. The First International Palestinian Oncology and Palliative Care Nursing Conference took place on 4 December 2018 at Bethlehem University. More than 120 delegates attended, including EONS Board Member Theresa Wiseman. The programme was packed with presentations from nurses and doctors and included their work around genetic mutations in breast cancer, truth-telling to patients at end-of-life and extended nursing roles.

More and more biosimilars for cancer are emerging as patents on widely used biological drugs expire. EONS and ESMO would like to collect information to understand the current knowledge, use and acceptance of biosimilars in cancer nursing. We also want to know whether there is a need for additional cancer nurse support and training on biosimilars in cancer treatment. Even if you currently know little about this subject, please help by taking our 10 minute survey.

Other News

Scientists have built a virtual reality (VR) 3D model of cancer, providing a new way to look at the disease. The tumour sample, taken from a patient, can be studied in detail and from all angles, with each individual cell mapped. Researchers say it will increase our understanding of cancer and help in the search for new treatments. The project is part of an international research scheme.

Patient having a breath test
A clinical trial has been launched to see if a breath test could detect the presence of cancer. Researchers want to find out if signals of different cancer types can be picked up in patterns of breath molecules. The Cancer Research UK team in Cambridge, UK, will collect breath samples from 1,500 people, some with cancer. If the technology is proven, the hope is that breath tests could be used to decide if patients need to be referred for more tests. They could potentially be used alongside blood and urine tests to help doctors detect cancer at an early stage, the researchers said. But it will be two years before the results of the exploratory trial are known.
