EONS Newsletter

Helen Oswald, EONS Communication ManagerThis month, we release the exciting news that ECND2019 will be hosted by Prague in the Czech Republic. We can also announce that registration is now open for EONS12 @ ESMO 2019, and our draft programme is available too – so, if you do one thing, register for our fantastic conference now! On an inspirational note, we were struck recently by the message from the President of the International Council of Nurses, Annette Kennedy, at ESNO Congress 2019: “You’re not just a nurse. Take pride in what you do. You're saving lives, and making a difference in someone’s life.” We are all very busy, but it is worth stopping occasionally to remember the importance of the work we do. Read all about this and more below.

Lena SharpIn her new blog, our President, Lena Sharp, asks whether we are supporting our young cancer nurse (YCN) colleagues, or sometimes blocking their progress. She talks about some worrying stories that she heard recently at the YCN workshop in Lisbon, Portugal. Lena challenges all EONS members to support our younger colleagues and do everything we can to help them to continue to develop within our profession. They are the future of cancer care.

Front cover of the new guide to Chemotherapy for patients
The Hellenic Oncology Nurses Society-Hellenic Nurses Association has launched an “Educational Guide for patients undergoing chemotherapy” at an event in Athens, Greece. The Guide was welcomed by around 100 nurses, nurse managers and university faculty, attending either in person or via a live broadcast across the country. It was universally agreed to be a practical and helpful educational tool, and also an efficient and innovative aid for daily clinical practice. The Guide was created under the auspices of the Hellenic Society of Medical Oncologists. An “Educational Guide for patients undergoing radiotherapy” will be published by the Society soon.

News from across Europe

A speaker at an ESNO event
On 21 February, the European Specialist Nurses Organisation hosted its Annual Congress in Brussels, Belgium, entitled “The Specialist Nurse in European Healthcare Towards 2023”. Among the speakers, ESNO President, Andriano Friganovic emphasised that we should not think what Europe does for nurses but what we do for healthcare in the EU. ICN President Annette Kennedy highlighted some of the global health challenges and stated that investment in healthcare is an investment in the economy. She also told Congress “You’re not just a nurse. Take pride in what you do. You’re saving lives, and making a difference in someone’s life.” Maria-Teresa Parisotto from EDTNA/ERCS wondered if technology can replace cancer nursing and broke the silence about the importance of evaluation in healthcare. EONS and ESNO Board Member, Patrick Crombez, presented some of the RECaN results so far and highlighted the EONS Cancer Nursing Educational Framework. Finally, there was a lively debate about the opportunities and challenges in getting speciality nursing recognised at the national level. A key theme was the need for leadership from specialist nurses.

The Belgian Parliament’s Public Health Committee has announced that it has approved a statutory framework for specialist nurses. Belgian Minister of Health, Maggie De Block, said: “Nursing specialists work with one foot in practice and the other in science. That makes them perfectly placed to translate the latest scientific insights into clinical practice, so that patients can always count on care of the best possible quality. We want to further develop this role through the legal framework.” EONS Board member Johan de Munter, from Belgium, commented: “This step in recognition of specialist nurses is a promising one and we look forward to hearing more about its scope and reach. EONS strongly believes that cancer nursing should be a recognised speciality across Europe, based on a mutually agreed educational curriculum such as the EONS Cancer Nursing Education Framework, and that education for specialist cancer nurses should be made available. Our RECaN project is making major strides towards this goal.”

A woman smoking an e-cigarette
The European Commission is “reluctant” to sit with the tobacco industry at the same table to discuss novel tobacco products such as e-cigarettes, a high-ranking EU official has said. E-cigarettes may be less harmful, according to some reports, but they’re still “poison,” says Arūnas Vinčiūnas, head of cabinet of EU Health Commissioner Vytenis Andriukaitis.
