Building further on the successful 1st Research Proposal Workshop, a 2nd EONS Research Proposal Workshop is planned to take place from 29-31 August 2012 at the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden.

This exciting EONS Research Proposal Workshop is designed for oncology nurses who have an interest in and aptitude for research and who would like to develop their confidence and skills in writing a research proposal. Applicants must be able to identify a problem or issue related to their clinical practice, which they would like to investigate through a research study.

The aim of the 3 day research workshop is to provide a supportive and constructive learning environment in which oncology nurses can begin to develop their research ideas into a research proposal. It is hoped that these could then be submitted to a suitable research funder.

The workshop will be organised so that the clinical problems and ideas identified by participants in their applications can be taken forward and developed into research proposals. Small groups of participants will work together as peers with a more experienced researcher, so that all can contribute constructively to the development of each other's research proposal, and at the same time, develop their own confidence and practical skills in research. In addition the workshop will include short talks on research methods / developing a research proposal, as well as a keynote lecture from an inspirational researcher and some short presentations by oncology nurses whose research has had a genuine impact on practice.

Although this is an intensive workshop, it would be impossible to write a full research proposal in the time available! We are therefore asking applicants to identify, in advance of the workshop, a “mentor” who will provide ongoing advice and support in order to develop the full proposal. Mentors must be experienced researchers who

  • agree to confirm they will act as mentor once the applicant has been selected.
  • agree to offer a minimum of 10 hours support and guidance to the applicant in the development of their research proposal.
  • have relevant skills and expertise to support applicants.
  • agree to forward their cv and any additional information indicating their suitability as mentor to the applicant.
  • agree to forward a summary CV of no more than two pages, including any recent research grants, publications and mentoring/teaching experience and a statement indicating their suitability to mentor the applicant.

All mentors will be provided with a mentoring “goodwill fee” of 500 Euros following return of a progress report from the participant within 3 months of attending the workshop. Mentors will not attend the workshop itself. All work with the mentors will take place in the participant’s home country.

It is important to emphasise that this workshop will require active participation and discussion.

It is expected that workshop participants will produce research proposals to be carried forward into research studies that have the potential to improve cancer nursing practice.

Profile of the ideal candidate:

An oncology nurse who:

  • has a first degree or Masters degree in nursing / oncology nursing or equivalent in the country of residence.
  • works with cancer patients on a regular basis; either in direct patient care, nursing research, or the management, organization and coordination of patient care.
  • has a genuine interest in research.
  • is fluent/confident in English (reading, writing and speaking).
  • is able to identify a suitable mentor.
  • is, or willing to become, an individual EONS member or is a member of his/her national oncology nursing society.

Successful applicants will be provided with free accommodation and travel (economy fare) will be refunded, but they are expected to pay 100 Euros towards registration.
