Faecal immunochemical test not good at finding adenomas
Added: Wednesday 7 March 2012
Research reported in the New England Journal
of Medicine has found that a faecal immunochemical test performed poorly in finding adenomas, some of which are precancerous. The research found that a one-time screening with a faecal immunochemical test (FIT) was as effective as a one-time colonoscopy for finding colorectal cancer in an intention-to-screen analysis, but
colonoscopy found more cancers among patients actually screened. There was low take-up in both groups, but the FIT group was more likely to participate, which may have led to any advantage over colonoscopy being exaggerated.
