Airport scanners: really a health risk?

The European Commission has just published the opinion of the Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks (SCENIHR) on the health effects of security scanners for passenger screening  based on X-ray technology (ionising radiation). In brief: the Committee concluded that scanners using backscatter radiation represent little risk to health, but scanners using transmission radiation are more of a concern, particularly if used routinely on frequent flyers.
