East-West divide on treatment availability

Results of a survey presented at the recent ESMO congress in Madrid find that treatments for advanced cancer are harder to access and require higher costs for the patient in Eastern Europe than equivalent treatments in Western Europe. The discrepancies in access and cost are most noticeable when it comes to treatments that prolong life and improve quality of life but do not cure the patient. The difference was much less marked for treatments that increase cure rates.
