Society Focus - August 2013
AIIAO: Italian Oncology Nurses Association
For the August Society Focus, Danuta Lichosik gives some valuable information about her National Society.
AIIAO/Italian Oncology Nurses Association was founded in 2011 in Florence, bringing together three existing Italian oncology nursing associations: AIO, AIAO and AIIO. The first National Congress of the new society was held in Florence in 2012, with Erik van Muilekom, currently EONS President-Elect, as our guest of honour.
In May this year we headed to Naples for our Annual Congress, celebrating two years of the Association’s activities.
AIIAO functions as an independent nonprofit organisation. Our official Mission and Values are: Research, Update Culture, Integration, Innovation, Change.
The association aims to promote the culture of nursing with particular interest in the field of oncology. Our method for achieving these objectives is all about interacting with other organisations engaged in the prevention, treatment and care for people with cancer.
Our objectives also include the promotion of excellence in quality of care to cancer patients, with the prospect of introducing profound changes and significant innovations in the spirit of multidisciplinarity. We are also committed to the development of research and continuous updating of best practice.
Association members may participate in our Annual Congress, during which we present an annual report, a budget report and an action plan for the near future.
AIIAO have a website www.aiiao.it where Association members can view scientific papers, conference presentations, news or clinical practice guidelines.
We also have several focus working groups for: regional coordination, reviews, translations, research, education, publishing and the website.
We have an open discussion forum for oncology nurses.
AIIAO cooperates with national and international cancer organisations and has been a member of EONS since 2012. Over the past year we have increased contacts with other professional associations related to oncology and cancer patient groups, carrying out joint projects.
Association members are developing research and education projects in collaboration with many National and International Universities.
