Big congratulations and thanks to everyone who took part in ECND2019 on 18 May! Your participation helped make the day a major success as we spread the word about this year’s safety theme across Europe, and the world.

Now our thoughts are turning to the next important date in the cancer nursing calendar – EONS12 in Barcelona in September. If you haven’t booked yet – hurry! – hotel prices in Barcelona are rising fast. Find out more below about this major learning and networking opportunity which will enhance your practice and boost your career. It’s incredible value! And finally, don’t forget to vote in the EONS Board elections – make your voice count!

EONS President Lena Sharp holds the EONS Safety Manifesto
ECND2019 on Saturday 18 May was a huge success! Our theme this year was SAFETY – for cancer nurses and for their patients. This important day in the cancer nursing calendar saw the launch of the EONS Safety Manifesto by EONS’ President Lena Sharp, and its endorsement by many colleagues, supporters and allies. Cancer nurses all over Europe made a major impact across social media and held events and celebrations to call attention to our safety campaign. The EONS Board and Working Groups gathered in our host city of Prague, where a Roundtable discussion on cancer nursing specialty education in the Czech Republic took place. It was attended by the Czech MEP Pavel Poc, Mgr. Alice Strnadová, MBA, Chief Nurse of the Czech Republic from the Ministry of Health, PhDr. Martina Šochmanová, MBA, Czech Nurses Association President, Mgr. Darja Hrabánková-Navrátilová, Oncology Nursing Group President and other leading figures from the world of European cancer nursing. High level talks are now taking place to take this ambition forward.

The impressive venue for EONS12
It’s time to register for the EONS12 conference at the ESMO Congress in Barcelona this September! The EONS Cancer Nursing Track covers three action-packed days – from Saturday 28 to Monday 30 September on the theme of Cancer nursing, translating science into clinical practice and better safety for all. The programme features a wide range of excellent talks and speakers, including many of our colleagues within EONS! Register at the special cancer nurse rate of 459,80 Euros (including VAT) – and make sure you book your accommodation as soon as possible before hotel prices skyrocket!

EONS President Lena Sharp and President Elect Andreas Charalambous, who chair the Scientific Committee, commented: “We’re really excited to be holding our EONS Conference alongside the ESMO Congress again this year. Once more, our conference will offer rich opportunities for joint sessions, networking and a top-quality packed programme – whether a clinical cancer nurse, an academic or a researcher, you should seize the opportunity to be present!”

*Due to the generous support of ESMO, we are able to offer English to Spanish translation for cancer nurses attending EONS12 and also registration in Spanish. (The superb conference venue – Fira Gran Via, Barcelona – is pictured above.)

News from across Europe

The European Parliament
Did healthcare matter in the European Parliament elections? In a recent Eurobarometer survey, 70% of European citizens say they want more action on health – but will they get it? The European election results show that the centre-right European People’s Party (EPP, 177 seats) and the centre-left Socialists and Democrats (S&D, 149 seats) remain the two largest blocs, followed by the Alliance of European Liberals and Democrats (Alde&R, 107 seats).

The EPP Manifesto stated that health will remain central to their policies and EPP’s leading candidate is to become the next European Commission President; Manfred Weber has even gone so far as to call for a European Cancer Plan. The S&D’s report calls for proper food and nutrition policy to protect human health. Green parties gained 69 seats (at least 15 more seats than in 2014) and are going to have greater strength when pushing their environment and public health agenda – to put pressure on pharmaceutical and chemicals manufacturers, achieve universal health coverage, reduce health inequalities and ensure access to medicines.

Interestingly, several key members from MEPs Against Cancer Group will not be returning to the European Parliament. It remains to be seen who will step up as new leaders in the fight against cancer in the European Parliament. The implementation of the Cytoxic and Mutagens Directive (Directive 2004/37/EC ) will remain of central importance for EONS, fitting well into our work on safety and the key messages of the EONS Safety Manifesto. The EONS advocacy working group and team will be following the make-up of the new Parliament and the election of the new Commission president closely and will bring you regular updates via this newsletter. More information on the European Elections is available here.

The recent advent of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy has revolutionised the clinical treatment of cancer. Despite the therapeutic successes of CAR T-cell therapy, the intervention carries the risk of severe side effects. These include neurotoxicity, which can result in headache, confusion, and delirium, among other neural changes. These debilitating effects remain poorly understood and characterised. A team at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in the US has catalogued the neurological symptoms of patients who had received CAR T-cell therapy to better understand its neurotoxic side effects. EONS will be having a symposium on these revolutionary treatments at EONS12, please join us if you would like more information on this topic.
