Young cancer nurses gathering in Lisbon
The first Young Cancer Nurse (YCN) meeting was held in Lisbon this year, with 13 representatives from different countries and EONS Working Groups. The purpose of the meeting was to gather the national representatives and get to know the needs and challenges YCNs face in Europe, and examine how EONS can support YCNs. It was concluded that EONS needs to expand the network and to identify the, mainly the educational, needs of YCNs, in order to develop further opportunities. Sara Torcato Parreira, EONS YCN representative, said: “The YCN network hopes to have another meeting in the future and to make this an annual event. Please keep in touch with EONS and your national society via social media and the website to find out what opportunities lie in store for you as a YCN.”

EONS at ONS Congress
EONS President Lena Sharp and Chief Operating Officer Emma Woodford attended the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Congress in the US in April. Their presentation on our RECaN project and how it has influenced EONS’ work was very well received and generated a discussion about how such research could also be useful in North America and other parts of the world. EONS very much values our longstanding connection with ONS, and other international organisations such as ISNCC and MASCC, and we are discussing more collaboration in the future.

News from across Europe

The European Parliament
An important event has been held in the European Parliament by the European Network against the Privatisation and Commercialisation of Health and Social Protection, supported by EPSU (European Federation of Public Service Unions). Concerns were voiced by panellists that too much focus on cost-effectiveness and reductions in public spending on healthcare systems threaten the universal right to health and raise serious economic and environmental concerns. In this light, the group proposed that a new directive from the European Commission should be forthcoming to protect public services from privatisation that aims to turn health care systems into for-profit businesses.

The European Parliament has secured important amendments to EU health and safety legislation to protect healthcare professionals in the cancer sector. EONS President Lena Sharp said: “EONS will be working closely with ECCO, ESOP and others over the next months to raise with the Commission how best to protect healthcare professionals in respect to cytotoxic and hazardous medicines. This includes the importance of rigorously applied safety standards, and considering special measures that may be required for particular groups, such as individuals who are pregnant.”

ESNO banner
The European Specialist Nurses Organisation (ESNO) has launched a Position Statement following its recent Congress. In it, ESNO calls on national authorities to invest in a Specialist Nurses Health Workforce and implement cross border Regulatory Frameworks towards a legally embedded and harmonised position of the Specialist Nurses in each Member State. ESNO maintains that a recognised European title for Specialist Nurses with clearly defined and harmonised roles and responsibilities to a prescribed standard is called for.

The European Commission has appointed the former Lithuanian health minister, Vytenis Andriukaitis, as the new commissioner-elect for health. As part of his portfolio, Mr Andriukaitis has expressed a desire to tackle health inequalities in Europe, reducing the impact they have on public health. He further suggests that health policy has a key role to play in economic growth and job creation across the EU region.

On the occasion of the 13th European Patients’ Rights Day on 10 April, the Active Citizenship Network (ACN) hosted two conferences with the topics “A Debate on citizens’ expectations” and “Digital Health and Personalised Medicines”. The multi-stakeholder events gave civic and patient organisations the opportunity to address their questions about the future healthcare challenges across Europe to prospective MEPs and present the EU Charter of Patients’ Rights to attendees. The discussion included priority topics such as prevention, access, quality and innovation in medicines and treatments. All current MEPs promised to work towards promoting prevention and safety for both patients and nurses, which is also one of the core EONS strategy points that will be introduced with the launch of the EONS Safety Manifesto on our website during ECND2019.
