The 2nd ESO-EONS-EEBR Masterclass took place in Belgrade, Serbia, from1-3 September 2021.
In total, 27 nurses from eight eastern European countries attended this event, a collaboration between European School of Oncology (ESO) and EONS. The 2nd Eastern European Masterclass Nursing Faculty was Lena Sharp, Helena Ullgren and Matthew Fowler. The 3-day program, based on EONS Cancer Nursing Education Framework, included sessions focusing on recent developments in cancer treatment (immunotherapy, radiotherapy, targeted drugs and chemotherapy) as well as psychosocial support, safety and team communication, cancer prevention and lifestyle issues. We also covered topics related to professional development, such as different cancer nursing roles, clinical leadership and working conditions. In addition, patient cases and clinical dilemmas were discussed.
It was clear that the pandemic has had a massive impact on all the participants and their work. Experiences and strategies were shared. On-site translations (English/Serbian) were available during the whole event. The Masterclass was well-evaluated and is clear that these events are important, as many of the attending nurses report few other learning opportunities. The plan to arrange the next Eastern European Master class as a joint event with both nurses and medics.
This Masterclass in Oncology Nursing is specifically designed to meet the educational needs of cancer nurses from Eastern Europe and Balkan region. Three intensive days of full immersion in up-to-date cancer nursing create a collective spirit of teaching and learning to improving clinical skills and patient care.
