Call for Experts – Adolescent and Young Adult with Cancer Project

Background:

The European Youth Cancer Network (YARN) project, coordinated by Youth Cancer Europe (YCE), is an EU-funded initiative aiming to improve the well-being and long-term outcomes for adolescents and young adults (AYA’s) affected by cancer

EONS is responsible for several key work packages and tasks within this project, including the development of multilingual resources, inclusivity tools, and educational materials for advanced disease and palliative care. The project will identify critical gaps in support of AYA’s that national funding cannot address, particularly in the areas of transnational collaboration, inclusion and developing multilingual resources. The project aims to fill these gaps and create a more cohesive and supportive environment.

  • Psychosocial and mental health care.
  • Educational and career support.
  • Long-term follow-up care and transition.
  • Resources for managing side effects and relapse.
  • Equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI).
  • Healthy lifestyle.
  • Digital platform development and maintenance.
We are looking for two (2) experts in AYA either working in clinical practice or academia to contribute to the following tasks:
WP5 – EQUITY, DIVERSITY, AND INCLUSION (EDI)
  • Develop and pilot an Inclusivity Checklist and Certification System for cancer care. This will be developed through a Workshop at ESMO/EONS18 Berlin.
  • Design and implement bite-size online modules x 6.
  • Expertise needed: EDI in healthcare, certification systems, education & training, ability to develop learning, teaching and assessment.
WP8 – DIGITAL PLATFORM ACCESSIBILITY
  • Support platform redesign to enhance accessibility and sustainability.
  • Expertise needed: Odoo - UX/UI for accessibility, EU Accessibility Act, eHealth tools.
Conditions:
  • Experts may be recruited from within the EONS working groups or wider network. 
Expert Profile and Required Skills:

We are inviting passionate and experienced cancer nurses to join our expert panel. We welcome candidates who demonstrate expertise in one or more of the following areas:

1. Clinical and research expertise: 
  • Proven experience in oncology with a focus on adolescents and young adults
    (AYA) is essential (knowledge and expertise in AYA 15 to 39 years).
  • Familiarity with the unique bio psychosocial, and transitional care needs and challenges of young cancer patients.
  •  Advanced training or academic credentials in public health, oncology, and / or cancer research.
2. Patient advocacy and support:
  • First-hand experience or demonstrable work with cancer survivors at any
    level (clinical, research, educational), to help bridge care with empathetic
    insight.
  • Familiarity with the European (and broader) regulatory landscape and a track
    record in shaping meaningful policy discussions can be a strong asset.
3. Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI):
  • A track record in promoting EDI across health care initiatives and throughout the cancer care continuum—from diagnosis through survivorship.
4. Communication and networking skills:
  • Excellent communication skills with a solid record of effective collaboration
    in multidisciplinary, multi-stakeholder, or international settings.
  • Experience in leading or engaging with cross-national networks and projects
    is beneficial.
  • Work collaboratively as a team.
  • Comfort with digital tools and virtual collaboration platforms.
5. Leadership and personal attributes:
  • Empathy, resilience, and the drive to advocate passionately on behalf of
    young cancer patients.
  • A proactive approach to shaping care protocols, policy discussions, and
    educational initiatives.
Responsibilities

As an expert in our network, you will be expected to:

➢  Share your specialised knowledge and insights to enhance the quality and accessibility of AYA cancer care.

➢  Engage in interdisciplinary collaborations that drive research, policy advocacy, and innovation in Europe’s cancer care landscape.

➢  To consistently keep deadlines, prioritise tasks, set realistic goals, allocate buffer time, and use project management tools.

➢  Have the time to commit as will be time dependent.

➢  Communicate regularly with the project leaders on behalf of EONS to ensure everyone is aware of deadlines and progress.

➢  Regularly review progress and adjust plans as needed to stay on track.
