EONS Accreditation of Safe Workplace: Promoting Quality and Safer Care Across Europe
05 June 2025
How can we actively promote quality and safer care for patients throughout Europe?
That has been a key question and challenge for the European Oncology Nursing Society (EONS) over recent years. To meet this challenge, EONS has led several initiatives - including the ReCan campaign, the Safety Manifesto, and the European Cancer Nursing Index (ECNI). These projects have raised awareness of the vital importance and impact of safe, high-quality nursing care among nurses and key stakeholders across Europe.
Now, EONS is proud to introduce a new milestone in this journey: the EONS Accreditation of Safe Workplace.
This official EONS recognition is awarded to oncology departments that voluntarily seek to be assessed for their commitment to fostering safer and inspiring workplaces - environments where cancer nurses can lead improvements in patient care quality.
The accreditation is a bottom-up initiative: nurses and their departments take the lead in pursuing this recognition, demonstrating a shared commitment to excellence, safety, quality, and continuous improvement in cancer nursing care.
How the Accreditation Works
Departments applying for accreditation participate in a dedicated survey, with input from both nurses and nurse managers. The assessment covers six key quality domains:
- Safe environment and general policy
- Education
- Safe workplace and worker protection
- Patient care
- Management of hazardous drugs
- Management of radiation
This evaluation provides each department with a valuable snapshot of key factors related to patient-centred quality care and workplace standards. It can serve as a roadmap toward even safer, more supportive environments for both patients and staff - and, ultimately, toward formal EONS workplace accreditation.
