EONS Supports EU Action to Protect Healthcare Workers from Hazardous Medicines

EONS supports the latest step taken by the European Commission to safeguard the health and safety of healthcare workers across Europe. On 25 February 2025, the Commission published a Communication establishing an indicative list of hazardous medicinal products (HMPs), in line with Article 18a of Directive 2004/37/EC.

This list complements the EU Guidance for the Safe Management of Hazardous Medicinal Products at Work, which EONS helped to prepare and promote in 2023. It offers crucial support to employers, occupational health professionals, and nursing teams by enhancing risk assessments and harmonising preventive measures across the EU.

As nurses are often at the frontline of administering and handling hazardous medicinal products, this step is a significant milestone in ensuring better protection, particularly from carcinogens, mutagens, and reprotoxic substances (CMRs).

EONS is proud to have contributed to the development of this framework and will continue to advocate for safe, evidence-based working environments for all oncology nurses.
